In a hurry? Use the audio speed quick guide instead.
AudioDirector's Adjust Duration (Change Speed) tool speeds up or slows down a clip, so it gets shorter or longer. Use it when music or a voice-over has to fill a set time, such as 20 seconds. The pitch stays the same by default, or you can let it change with the speed.
- In the Edit room, select the clip in the library.
- In Editing Tools, click Adjust Duration (Change Speed).
- Type a New audio duration, or drag the Speed multiplier slider.
- Preview the new speed, click Apply, then click OK.
- Click Export, name the file, choose a format, and click Export.
Steps to Change Audio Speed
Step 1: Open Adjust Duration (Change Speed)
In the Edit room, select your clip in the library at the top left. Then, in the Editing Tools panel below it, click Adjust Duration (Change Speed) under Edit Audio. This example uses Song.mp3, a clip that is 28.597 seconds long.
The whole clip is selected, so the change applies to all of it. To change only part, drag across the waveform to select it first. In the Edit room, you can also change just one channel of a stereo clip.

Step 2: Set the New Length or Speed
The panel opens at 1.00x speed. Set the new speed with either of these settings, and the other one updates to match:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| New audio duration | Sets the length you want, and the speed changes to match. Use it when the clip must fit a set time. The result can be a few milliseconds off. |
| Speed multiplier | Drag left to slow the clip down and make it longer, as slow as 0.1x. Drag right to speed it up and make it shorter, as fast as 10x. |
| Keep pitch | Keeps the original pitch at the new speed. It's checked by default. Clear it to let the pitch rise as the clip speeds up, or fall as it slows down. |
This example types 0:00:20.000, which sets the speed to 1.43x, and leaves Keep pitch checked.

Step 3: Preview and Click Apply
Under Preview, select Adjusted result and click the play button below the waveform to hear the new speed. Select Original audio to compare it with the clip as it was.
To start over, click Back to default, the last icon at the top right of the panel. When it sounds right, click Apply.

Step 4: Click OK
A message tells you the adjustment is complete. Click OK.

Step 5: Find the New Clip and Export It
AudioDirector adds the new clip to the library below the original, here *Song.mp3. The asterisk marks an edited version that isn't exported yet. The Length field at the bottom right shows 0:00:19.997, about 20 seconds.
To save the clip as a file, click Export at the top of the window. In Export Audio, type a File name and click the ... button next to Location to choose a folder. Choose a Format, then click Export.
The trimming tutorial explains the other export settings.

Adjust Duration (Change Speed) works in the Mix room too. Select a clip on a track, or select the Master Track to change the audio on every track at once. To fit music to a set length without changing its speed, use Adjust Duration (Smart Fit) instead.
We tested these steps in AudioDirector 365 version 17.0.6908 on Windows.

Not by default. Keep pitch is checked when the panel opens, so the clip keeps its original pitch at the new speed. Clear Keep pitch to let the pitch change with the speed.
Type the length in New audio duration, and the Speed multiplier changes to match. In this example, 0:00:20.000 set the speed to 1.43x and gave a clip 19.997 seconds long.
No. Clicking Apply adds an edited version to the library, marked with an asterisk, and the original stays in the library too. To save the new speed as a file, click Export, which outputs your adjustments in a new file.
